University of Science and Technology Hospital Sana´a, Sana´a, Yemen

Purpose of use

The following describes the use of an MRI-System for the ‘University of Science and Technology hospital of Sana'a’ in the Yemen.

The University is in the capital city of Sana'a in the republic Yemen. It is one of the biggest clinic centers in the country and indeed the area known as the "Horn of Africa"; the University considering itself as a pioneer for the whole region. The vision is: “To be a pioneer for a high-quality medical service in the republic Yemen and the surrounding areas”.

To fulfill this ambition, the most modern medical know-how is gradually coming into the country; an example being the procurement of the Modern Siemens MRI-System which is used for head investigations and whole body examinations, as well as extremities exploration. In addition, the non-invasive procedure to view the bile duct and the pancreatic duct is possible by Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP); a method used to determine if gallstones are lodged in any of the ducts surrounding the gallbladder. The hospital also uses special coils for the examination of the female breast during precautionary screening for cancer.

Together with highly qualified doctors and first-classical medical equipment, the hospital provides top level services to Yemeni patients and thus, alleviating the necessity for them to travel outside of Yemen for professional care.

Technical data

  • MRI-System Siemens MAGNETOM 1.5T Avanto
  • RF room made of steel
  • Dimensions (L x W x H) = 6.340 x 4.090 x 2.750mm
  • Start up October 2009
  • Location of the University is the Republic of Yemen

The host building configuration necessitated the RF room door to be inward opening, this in turn requiring an emergency hatch to be fitted to comply with the safety rules of the MRI-system supplier. The people in this region are extremely sensitive to noise and very special care was taken for sound insulation of the system.
